Elizabeth “Elsie” MacGill, “Queen of the Hurricanes”, aeronautical engineer, feminist. The first female graduate of electrical engineering at the University of Toronto (1927), MacGill was also the first woman to earn her master’s degree in aeronautical engineering (1929) and became the first practising Canadian woman engineer. In 1938, she became chief aeronautical engineer of Canadian Car & Foundry (Can Car), where she headed the Canadian production of Hawker Hurricane fighter planes during the Second World War.
